Required qualifications:

The required qualifications of the successful candidate are a doctorate in computer science or closely related field, with outstanding research and teaching records that warrant an appointment at the rank of full professor with tenure. Tenure is contingent upon Board of Regents approval.

It is recommended that the successful candidate has an active security clearance or is eligible for a security clearance, up to and including Top Secret.

Description of Job Duties:

The Department seeks exceptional candidates with (1) a record of high quality scholarship and competitive research with federal, state, and industry funding, (2) experience and leadership in institutions of higher education, industry, or professional organizations, (3) an understanding of pedagogies that will lead to student success and excellence in undergraduate and graduate teaching, (4) experience leading interdisciplinary teams, and (5) mentorship experience and a commitment to inclusion and diversity. Successful candidates must demonstrate a clear vision for expanding the research productivity of the Department, and the ability to build strong relationships across departments and colleges within the institution, along with establishing projects with industry and government entities. In addition, they must be able to articulate a clear vision for the future of the Department of Computer Science that fulfills the University’s goals toward research extensive status.

The University of Texas at San Antonio is designated a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Operations and has just been approved for $70 million in funding to construct two new facilities – A National Security Collaboration Center and a proposed School of Data Science. The Computer Science Department has 18 full-time faculty, 5 professors in practice, 4 full-time lecturers, 1,350 undergraduate students, 80 M.S., and 67 Ph.D. students. It offers B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Science and optional concentrations in Software Engineering, Computer and Information Security, Cloud and Systems, and Data Science. Annual research expenditures are 7.2 million dollars, with a broad range of research interests that include visualization, cyber security, cloud computing, bioinformatics and computational biology, big data, machine learning, artificial intelligence and high performance computing. The College and Department has excellent research facilities including the Center for Infrastructure Assurance and Security; Institute for Cyber Security; the NSF-supported CREST Center for Security and Privacy Enhanced Cloud Computing (C-SPECC) and numerous laboratories led by different faculty. UTSA is one of the 14 University of Texas System’s Campuses situated in the City of San Antonio. Over the last ten years the College of Sciences at UTSA has experienced sustained growth in terms of student population, number of faculty, and research awards. The College includes seven departments: Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Environmental Science and Ecology, Geological Sciences, Mathematics, and Physics and Astronomy. The University enjoys strong ties with other research institutions, government entities, and companies located in San Antonio, regionally, and nationally.

The City of San Antonio is the seventh largest city in the United States and is located in South Central Texas, within the Texas Triangle. San Antonio is in close proximity to other large population centers in Texas including Austin, Houston, and Dallas. This area is a hub for a wide range of computing, cyber security, and engineering industries, and is currently experiencing large economic and population growth.
